This wasn't supposed to be a road trip year, but after we had to reschedule our Disneyland trip to the summer we realized it was only a week away from a family reunion in Utah. Rather than returning home we decided to tie the two trips together and make a three week road trip. Initially we didn't know what to do with the extra week, but we soon realized that adding a visits to San Diego and the Arizona national parks would fill in the time nicely.
After a five day stay at Disneyland we took a short drive south to San Diego. Vivian was still sick after catching COVID on our last day at Disneyland so we had to alter things a bit during our stay. We were supposed to all go to the San Diego Zoo, but instead David and Jamie took shifts quarantining Vivian while the older girls went to zoo. The zoo was nice, but it didn't live up to its world famous reputation.
We stayed at a Vrbo apartment in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego. It was a great location as it was a short walk to both the bay and convention center. It had a separate bedroom which was convenient for quarantining Vivian. I thought it was odd that the apartment provided a supply of earplugs, but we soon learned why by the evening. The Gaslamp Quarter is filled with clubs and bars and we were only a floor above the main street. Loud music and revelry could be heard up until 2 am. We were all able to sleep so it wasn't that bad.
The next day was 4th of July. Jamie and Rachel met up with her cousin Jamie while Lily and I visited the convention center. Jamie and I also got away alone for a dinner of tapas and sangria. The food was excellent, but Jamie didn't drink her share of sangria so I had to take care of it. We ended the night by watching the fireworks over the bay.
