Our last Colorado national park visit was at Rocky Mountain National Park. We started with a short hike around Lily Lake (for Lily's namesake) before settling down at our campsite at Glacier Basin campground. It was at 8600' elevation which wasn't great for Jamie as she gets altitude sick at lower elevations.
The next morning I let Jamie rest at the campground and took the kids on a hike to Emerald Lake. The short hike featured three beautiful lakes, lots of scenery and an up close view of a bull elk. In the afternoon we took a drive on Trail Ridge Road which rose above the forests to the alpine tundra. Near the top I took the kids on the Tundra Communities trail where we reached a final elevation of 12308'. Jamie unfortunately had to stay behind in the car, but after we returned we discovered a busy pika community across the street to the delight of all.
The next day we did one final hike to Spraque Lake which was close to the campground. It was a short hike, but Jamie was able to join us this time.
Overall Rocky Mountain was a great national park where we could have spent an extra day exploring. We just need to find a way for Jamie to acclimate better at higher elevations.
