Petrified Forest National Park was small enough to explore in one day, but had much more than petrified wood to see. The north end started with colorful multilayered hill landscape, like a mini rounded version of the Grand Canyon. Nearby was a marker noting where a section of the historic Route 66 highway used to go through the park. Further south we encountered native American ruins from before the 1300s with petroglyphs depicting unknown stories. In the southern half of the park we finally got to see abundant collections of petrified wood from over 200 million years ago. We did two small hikes along these "forests" to end our day at the park.
