We splurged this time and stayed at the Grand Californian to see what it's like to stay at a Disney hotel. The most impressive part of the hotel was the large open lobby styled after old national park lodges. The room was nice, but there was no view other than the back of another section of the hotel. There were a few pools, but they were extremely crowded during the day. Jamie did spend a few hours at the spa which was a nice treat.
The hotel was extremely expensive, at three times the price of hotels we've stayed at before. There really wasn't any justification or advantage for the price. Breakfast wasn't included, the California Adventure entrance from the hotel was open to non-guests, some of the surrounding Anaheim hotels are almost as close to the parks and there were no perks at all (like early admission) for staying at the hotel. We had a nice time at the Grand Californian, but we most likely won't return due to the non-existent value it provides for the price.
