Sunriver was surrounded the volcanoes of Central Oregon. We knew about Crater Lake, Mount Bachelor and The Sisters, but we also learned about the nearby Newberry Volcano. It last eruption was over 1000 years ago, but evidence of the volcano was everywhere. We drove to the large caldera which contained two lakes and continued up to the top of Paulina Peak where we got a good view of the lakes and nearby mountains. Much closer to Sunriver was Lava Butte which was a small cinder cone with a road spiraling up to the top. On our last day Rachel and I biked to the top to get a final view of Central Oregon before driving home.
