Kings Canyon National Park borders Sequoia National Park, is managed together with Sequoia and even has a giant sequoia named after a Civil War general. Why they aren't the same park only California knows. What Kings Canyon does have that's unique is the canyon itself. Perhaps the most interesting part of the park was the dive along Kings Canyon Scenic Byway which twisted along steep cliff sides and gradually dropping down into the floor of the canyon.
Kings Canyon seemed better suited for backcountry hiking as there wasn't a lot to check out from the road. We did do a short hike to Zumwalt meadow whose lush grasses combined with the steep canyon cliff faces made for a beautiful setting. We also stopped at Roaring River Falls which was much more impressive than the trickling Tokopah Falls in Sequoia.
On the way back we stopped at Grant Grove which was another grove of giant sequoias. In the back was the General Grant tree which was only the second largest tree in the world. The grove did have a fallen tree whose trunk was turned into a hikable tunnel. Once done we had seen enough sequoias and were ready to continue our travels.
