For Bike Month this May I decided to go all out on distance. My goal was 2000 miles, but this year was much more competitive than the previous and I ended up riding 2500 miles to just get third place. The trick to getting so many miles was to do several 100 mile commute days. A 34 mile loop around the North end of Lake Washington from my work made it possible. The weekday rides were repetitive, but I tried to have fun on the weekend rides. Highlights were the rides to the Black Diamond Bakery and the ride along the very scenic Foothills Trail between Puyallup and Buckley. Also after a several year absence we finally worked in a lovely Mother's Day ride to the St. Michelle Winery. I doubt I'll ride so many miles again. I had to neglect work and family to spend so many wasted hours in the saddle. Also the competition has gotten too crazy. The lead teams are no longer companies, but groups with no other purpose than stacking themselves to get the most points. Finally the distance leader got in 4700 miles which is a level of lunacy I never want to reach.
