Cathedral Rock Hike
For our only local hike this year Julie and I went to Cathedral Rock on the east side of the Cascades near
Salmon la Sac. After a couple miles of hiking in the forest we reached an opening at Squaw lake. After couple miles further we got our first
view of Cathedral Rock. Unfortunately it required rock climbing so all we could do was hike around it and enjoy
the emerging Fall colors. Along the way we briefly hiked along the Pacific Crest Trail. We came across a lady
through hiker who had started from the Mexico border. She looked like she was just out on a day hike and not
someone who had hiked over 2000 miles. I find it interesting that the Wild author got so much publicity for not
even completing the trail, while the hiker we met (and ~200 other annual hikers) complete it without a movie
deal. It's an amazing accomplishment for those who do complete it.
The hike didn't seem complete so we continued to hike around the mountain involving a little scrambling. On
the other side we came across Peggy's Pond which was a small lake at the base of the mountain. It was a
pretty area with fall colors circling the pond and a view of Mt. Daniel behind us. It was the highlight of
the hike and worth the extra miles to get there.
