On our way to the redwoods the hot weather followed us to Grants Pass where it was over 100 degrees. Over the next 80 miles the temperature dropped considerable and when we reached Crescent City to spend the night the temperature was in the 50s. The next morning we headed down Highway 101 and in and out through
redwood forests on a rush to find a campsite. I had tried to book online, but all the reserved sites had been filled. We took a chance and drove a rough dirt road to the Gold Bluffs Beach campsite which didn't take reservations. We lucked out and found a site just off the beach.
The girls had fun playing around the campsite and down along the waves. It started out sunny so I was thinking we might spend two nights there, but the clouds soon rolled in and by morning it
had rained enough to soak the tent. The wet tent and gear convinced us to pack up and continue back north on our trip. Though the rain lessened the experience it was still a great site. At least four
groups asked us if we were leaving while we were packing up the car so we were indeed lucky to get the site in the first place.
