Less than a month after my 40th birthday I ran the Seattle Rock and Roll Marathon. It was my first marathon and
I trained for five months and worked hard to take care of my ankles which had ended my training for a previous
marathon. Near the end of this training both my knees and ankles were wearing down, but not enough
to keep me from running the race. On race day I did well during first half of the marathon, but the hill up to the Aurora bridge wore me down.
Just before mile 22 my quads finally gave up and I had to resort to intervals of walking and jogging. Still I was
able to finish the race strong, but much slower than I had hoped. My final time was 4 hours 1 minute and 13 seconds. I was disappointed to take over 4 hours to run the race, but I was happy to complete it. The race itself was
well organized with bands every mile and a scenic route around Seattle. I also got support from Jamie and the
girls at mile 14 and Julie and Jordan at miles 3, 14 and 24. At the end I felt I didn't want to run another
marathon ever again. Since then my memories of the suffering have faded and now think maybe later I will try again to beat the 4 hour mark, but not for at least another year.
