Europe Trip 2003

Florence - City Sights

Europe Map

While in Florence we toured three museums. The Accademia had a long line and few works, but it's main attraction is Michelangelo's impressive David. The Uffizi gallery also had a long line, but had more art, including works from Da Vinci and Raphael. The Bargello, was free of tourists, but still was packed with art including sculptures from Michelangelo and Donatello. It is amazing how many works of the Renaissance masters are contained within Florence. David will never watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles again without thinking about this city.

Beside the museums we also saw the Ponte Vecchio which is a bridge built in 1345 and covered with shops. Unfortunately, it was a tourist favorite and too crowded to be fully enjoyed. We did have some more pleasant walks around the surrounding hillsides, at least when we weren't lost. Although, even being lost, the walks were very scenic. One area, the Piazzale Michaelangelo, offered a panorama of the entire city, including our first full view of the Duomo.
