East Cast Trip - Maryland

D.C. Sights | D.C. Memorials | Virginia | Maryland | Pennsylvania | Family

After Virginia we drove to Cumberland Maryland to visit my Aunt Betty, her children and large collection of grandchildren. Cumberland is a pretty town made up of brick buildings and several church steeples. There wasn't much to do there though so we drove to Antietam National Battlefield where the deadliest day of battle happened in the Civll War. Almost 23,000 casualties occurred there on September 17, 1862. It was interesting touring various locations to see how the battle unfolded. After all the bloodshed neither side had gained an advantage.

After Maryland we toured Pennsylvania for a few days a returned back through eastern Maryland and spent a day in Baltimore. While driving through the city we got caught up in a Thanksgiving parade and were able to watch part of the parade from our car. Jamie was excited to see two Elvi in the procession. After the parade we stopped at Fort McHenry. This fort successfully defended a British attack during the War of 1812. Francis Scott Key watched the battle and wrote a poem about it which became the national anthem the Star Spangled Banner. The Smithsonian displays the flag that rose from the fort after the attack
