2004 Road Trip

Yellowstone National Park - Day 1

Trip Map

It wasn't long after leaving Grand Teton Park that we reached the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Instead of being greeted by natural beauty, we started the park with a burned out forest, a result of a massive 1988 fire. After some driving we came upon an area covered by geysers, including Old Faithful. We watched Old Faithful put on it's show and then we toured several other geysers and springs. The area lacked beauty, but the geology was very interesting. The park's active geology was created from massive eruptions that occurred hundreds of thousands of years ago. After seeing more than enough geysers we drove to Madison and camped for the night. Throughout the night we heard the elk bugling, some of which seemed to be just outside our tent.
